Having directed both Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, James Gunn is a rare filmmaker who has worked on both Marvel and DC projects. We also saw that happen when Avengers director Joss Whedon stepped in to finish work on 2017’s Justice League. But one thing we haven’t seen yet is a Marvel-DC crossover on the big screen.

Ever wondered who would win in a fight between Batman and Iron Man? How about the Avengers versus the Justice League? At some point, every comic book fan has considered what a crossover like that would look like, especially now that superheroes are such big business at the box office. It may never happen, but that hasn’t stopped Gunn from talking to Marvel about it.

Since Gunn has a foot in the doors at both Marvel and DC, fans like to run “who would win” scenarios by him. In a face-off between The Suicide Squad and the Guardians of the Galaxy, there is one clear winner: “The fans,” he tweeted.

Also, he reveals that he has indeed brought up the idea of a potential crossover with the decision-makers at both companies. “I’ve casually talked to the powers-that-be at both Marvel & DC about it,” he wrote. “I would love for it to happen. I don’t think it’s likely, but I don’t think it’s an impossibility either. THAT SAID, just constantly seeing crossovers & mashups is less enchanting to me than a strong story.”

The MCU meets the DCEU

Superhero movies aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Every year they seem to get bigger, breaking more box office records…give or take last year, which was different for everyone. After huge ensemble movies like Avengers: Endgame, fans will only expect things to get crazier.

Spider-Man: No Way Home will reportedly include both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s takes on the character starring alongside Tom Holland’s, a huge step forward for big screen superhero crossovers. Likewise, DC’s The Flash will welcome the return of classic Batman actor Michael Keaton.

If the current trend continues, maybe Marvel and DC will embrace working together to assemble a crazy cast sometime in the future. There’s certainly a lot of money to be made. Whether it would be a good movie is a different thing altogether.

Crossovers aside, Gunn still has a lot of work to do at both Marvel and DC. He’s currently awaiting the release of his huge, crazy antihero movie The Suicide Squad on August 6. And of course, he’s hard at work on the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is slated to premiere on May 23, 2023.
