Marvel Studios has a number of highly anticipated projects slated to drop in the latter half of the year, including television series and blockbuster films. But one of the biggest releases fans are looking forward to arrives early next year: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Touted as Marvel’s first foray into the horror genre, the Doctor Strange sequel will bring together many of the threads woven in this year’s releases; for instance, it will see Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) returning after the events of WandaVision.
The film also marks Sam Raimi’s return to directing after nearly a decade away. Raimi was the man behind the 2000s-era Spider-Man movies with Tobey Maguire, but he’s also had plenty of experience directing horror and thriller flicks. He and Doctor Strange 2 writer Mike Waldron have revamped the film since he was brought on to replace original director Scott Derrickson. According to Waldron, the end product is something that will live up to all the hype.
Spider-Man director takes on Doctor Strange
Speaking with SYFY WIRE, Waldron teased a thrilling movie that highlights Raimi’s directing talent:
"It’s a thrill ride with heart like you’d expect from a Sam Raimi superhero movie. Sam’s a genius and the way he moves the camera is really exciting and he’s not afraid to take chances. I think it’s gonna be a really cool experience for everybody."
The plot details for the upcoming film have been kept closely under wraps, even for a Marvel movie. However, given the time-bending events of WandaVision and Loki — along with the film’s title and several rumors surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home — most fans are assuming Doctor Strange’s next adventure will involve righting the timeline and dealing with Marvel’s multiverse. The Disney+ shows have already significantly messed with reality, and there’s still half a year to go before Benedict Cumberbatch returns to try and clean up this mess.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness release date
Viewers will find out what Raimi has planned when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally hits theaters on March 25, 2022. In the meantime, the events unfolding throughout the various other MCU projects may hold some clues about what’s to come.
