Good Omens season 2 is coming, based on a planned book sequel
By Dan Selcke
A couple of years back, Amazon Prime Video teamed up with the BBC to produce Good Omens, a very charming adaptation of the book of the same name jointly written by fantasy icons Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, with Gaiman being deeply involved with the production. It starred Michael Sheen and David Tennant as Aziraphale and Crowley, an angel and demon who had been on Earth since the beginning, formed a friendship, and found themselves having to avert an apocalypse.
The show was clearly a passion project for Gaiman, who considered making it a way of honoring the memory of Pratchett, who died in 2015. Even after the show was over, Gaiman didn’t seem able to stay away from the story, penning a cute little video about Aziraphale and Crowley talking on the phone during quarantine last year:
And now, a second season of Good Omens is on the way, based on a sequel that Gaiman and Pratchett planned but never ended up writing. “It’s 31 years since Good Omens was published, which means it’s 32 years since Terry Pratchett and I lay in our respective beds in a Seattle hotel room at a World Fantasy Convention, and plotted the sequel,” Gaiman told The Hollywood Reporter. “I got to use bits of the sequel in Good Omens — that’s where our angels came from. Terry’s not here any longer, but when he was, we had talked about what we wanted to do with Good Omens, and where the story went next.”
"I have enlisted some wonderful collaborators, and John Finnemore has come on board to carry the torch with me. There are so many questions people have asked about what happened next (and also, what happened before) to our favorite Angel and Demon. Here are the answers you’ve been hoping for. We are back in Soho, and all through time and space, solving a mystery, which starts with an angel wandering through Soho, with no memory."
Sheen also weighed in, his tongue firmly in cheek: “Personally I’m against it, but the world isn’t going to just save itself, is it? If David and I can manage to not fall out too badly this time it may even have a chance of getting finished.”
All that and we got a poster:
The first season of Good Omens felt like a labor of love, so it’s great to see the gang getting back together for another round. Season 2 will start filming in Scotland later this year, and premiere on Amazon Prime Video sometime after.
