George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead is widely regarded as one of the most influential horror movies of all time: after all, it kicked off the zombie apocalypse subgenre that inspired everything from 28 Days Later to The Walking Dead. Following the success of the movie, Romero created five other “of the Dead” films. But the original holds a unique fascination, which is why Warner. Bros. Home Entertainment is mounting a new animated version, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

George A. Romero wrote Night of the Living Dead alongside John Russo. It follows a small band of survivors locked up in a rural farmhouse during a zombie apocalypse. Tensions run high as each person has different ideas of how to survive. All the while, the undead begin to break down the barriers in an effort to kill and eat them. The movie has endured for decades, and its thought-provoking ending remains just as relevant now as it did back when it first premiered.

The new animated version if called Night of the Animated Dead and directed by Jason Axinn (To Your Last Death). It boasts a star-studded voice cast that includes Psych actors Dulé Hill (Ben) and James Roday Rodriguez (Tom), Katharine Isabelle (Barbara), Josh Duhamel (Harry Cooper), Nancy Travis (Helen Cooper), Katee Sackhoff (Judy), Jimmi Simpson (Johnny) and Will Sasso (Sheriff McClelland).

Why are there so many remakes of Night of the Living Dead?

There’s a reason why we have so many variations of this movie. Due to the lack of a copyright indication on the original distribution of Night of the Living Dead, Romero’s masterpiece entered the public domain ahead of its time, meaning anyone can adapt and interpret it in any way they see fit. As a result, over the years there have been a great many variations on the original story. Perhaps the best remake was Tom Savini’s 1990 version, which Romero also helped out on.

George A. Romero sadly passed away in 2017, but his legacy will endure far into the future. In fact, we’re not even done seeing new, original movies from him. Prior to his death, the filmmaker was working on Twilight of the Dead, the final movie in his beloved zombie franchise. He never got to see it hit screens, but his widow, Suzanne Romero, is working hard to make it happen.

Night of the Animated Dead doesn’t have a specific release date yet, although it will premiere on  Blu-ray, DVD, and digital sometime this fall.
