House of the Dragon is the first of several Game of Thrones prequel series in development at HBO. This one tells the story of the Dance of the Dragons, a brutal civil war fought between rival factions of the Targaryen family that tore Westeros apart over 100 years before the start of the original series. It could be the next big fantasy hit, but when will we get to start watching it?

Not for a while longer, unfortunately. Filming is still continuing in various locations, including in England, Spain and Portugal. The cast — which includes the likes of Matt Smith and Olivia Cooke — is vast, and it’ll take a while to get through what is sure to be a complicated shoot, to say nothing of all the special effects work to be done after the cameras have stopped rolling. After all, the show is set during a time when the Targaryens are at the height of their power. That means a lot of dragons, which means a lot of post-production work, which means a decent wait.

HBO has announced that House of the Dragon will be out sometime in 2022. Hopefully it’s closer to the beginning than the end of the year.

Game of Thrones prequel release date

The first season of House of the Dragon will consist of 10 episodes, just like most seasons of Game of Thrones before it. The story isn’t quite as massive as on Game of Thrones, so while that show went on for eight seasons, House of the Dragon will likely last for four or five at most, unless HBO has something up its sleeve we don’t know about.

We’ll have to wait and find out!

Next. House of the Dragon casts younger versions of key characters. dark
