Star Trek is flying high on TV these days, with no less than three shows already airing (DiscoveryPicard and Lower Decks) and more on the way. But the Star Trek movies have been a mess. Noah Hawley had a pitch that apparently went nowhere. Quentin Tarantino had a pitch that apparently went nowhere. Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez was working on something, but that also may have gone belly-up, because now Deadline brings us news of yet another Star Trek film in development, this one from director Matt Shakman.

Shakman still has one foot in the theater world, but he’s blown up recently after directing episodes of Game of Thrones — he helmed “The Spoils of War” from season 7, where Daenerys Targaryen wrecks the Lannister forces — and the entirety of WandaVision on Disney+, which was full of experimental flourishes. He was also a regular director on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, so the guy has a wide skill set. And now he’s chosen the Star Trek movie over a lot of other projects being offered to him.

Finally, a new Star Trek movie is happening

But will this Trek movie actually happen, or will it flounder like all the others? Well, Deadline says the film will “move at warp speed and begin production next spring.” I guess Paramount and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company got tired of all the stops and starts.

We don’t have a name for the new movie yet, nor a cast, but it has a script by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. That makes it the first Star Trek film to be written by female screenwriters.
