6. Temerant from The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss is not yet complete; fans have been waiting over a decade for the third book in the trilogy, The Doors of Stone. The wait annoys veteran readers and deters potential new ones from jumping in. But the lengthy delay has been well-chronicled across the internet, so let’s not dive into that.

Instead, let’s talk about the stunning world of Temerant. The Kingkiller world has often been likened to a mixture of A Song of Ice and Fire and Harry Potter, but it’s also its own thing. The story follows Kvothe, a talented musician, who embarks on a quest to seek revenge on a mysterious group known as the Chandrian after they murder his parents. He falls in love, studies magic at the University (the only one on the continent, so far as we know), and travels to all corners of the world.

There have been many maps of Temerant, but the version that blew me away was this illustration by Rothfuss’ frequent collaborator Nate Taylor. The level of depth is astounding. Most notably, it has a new vertical orientation as opposed to the horizontal one of previous maps. And inside the compass on the top left is an image of a Tinker. No map of Temerant looks as stunning as this one.
