5. Discworld by Terry Pratchett

In terms of fantasy worlds that are completely nonsensical in the most wonderful way, nothing compares to Discworld. Let’s first address the elephant in the room: Discworld is a flat planet on the backs of four elephants, each standing on the back of a giant turtle. Have you got that?

Pratchett took us on wild adventures throughout Discworld in 41 published novels between 1983 and  2015. His Discworld series is considered a seminal work of fantasy, inspiring many of today’s bestselling authors, such as Neil Gaiman. In fact, the two co-wrote Good Omens together.

The Discworld novels themselves are heavily comedic. While there are a few story arcs that stretch over multiple novels, most of them are very much stand-alone books. Pratchett has fun parodying classic authors in his books, including J.R.R. Tolkien and H.P. Lovecraft.

In 1995, fans were treated to The Discworld Mapp, a fold-out atlas showing off the entirety of Discworld. Drawn by Stephen Playert, it truly is a sight to behold.
