David Ayer rips 2016’s Suicide Squad, praises James Gunn
As the DC movie The Suicide Squad inches closer to its release date, director David Ayer took to Twitter to clear the air about what really happened to 2016’s Suicide Squad and how he has nothing but respect for the new movie directed by James Gunn.
Ayer posted a lengthy message after a caption that reads, “My turn.” He didn’t hold anything back about how he felt about Warner Bros. taking over creative control of his movie, and how hit “cut” of the film is very different. “I put my life into Suicide Squad,” he wrote. “I made something amazing – my cut is [an] intricate and emotional journey with some ‘bad people’ who are shit on and discarded (a theme that resonates in my soul). The studio cut is not my movie. Read that again.”
"And my cut is not the 10 week director’s cut – it’s a fully mature edit by Lee Smith standing on the incredible work by John Gilroy. It’s all Steven Price’s brilliant score, with not a single radio song on the whole thing. It has traditional character arcs, amazing performances, a solid 3rd act resolution. A handful of people have seen it. If someone says they have seen it, they haven’t."
David Ayer reveals the truth about his Suicide Squad
Ayer added that he doesn’t know how to quit, even “after [his] kids watched [him] come home every day after the studio takeover of the edit with [his] heart torn out.” He says he’s never been able to share his story and hints at the stories he’ll never tell from what happened during his time on a submarine when he was in the Navy. “I keep my covenants.”
What also comes out is that Ayer has nothing but respect for James Gunn and his new movie. “I’m so proud of James and excited for the success that’s coming. I support WB and am thrilled the franchise is getting the legs it needs. I’m rooting for everyone, the cast, the crew. Every movie is a miracle. And James’ brilliant work will be the miracle of miracles.” He ends his statement by saying this is the last time he will address this situation.
James Gunn replied to Ayer’s tweet with a supportive message of his own: “All my love and admiration, friend.”
#ReleaseTheAyerCut
When Warner Bros. finally confirmed the existence of Zack Snyder’s storied “Snyder Cut” of Justice League, they inadvertently launched a new outpouring of support from fans who wanted to see the same thing happen for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. In both Snyder and Ayer’s cases, fans knew something was amiss as soon as the movies premiered in theaters because there was footage in the trailers that didn’t appear on screen. Lots of footage.
Warner Bros. released a longer director’s cut of Suicide Squad to appease fans who wanted to see Jared Leto’s Joker doing the outlandish things that Ayer and the cast had hinted at while the movie was filming, but even the extended cut didn’t represent Ayer’s vision.
Though the #RestoreTheAyerCut hashtag has been around for years now, it started picking up steam again with the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and now fans are prepping for a big push to coincide with the release of The Suicide Squad.
Warner Bros. executives have said there is no plan for an “Ayer Cut” of Suicide Squad — Ayer famously responded “Why not?” on social media.
If there is a finished version of the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. would do well to release it. They denied the existence of the Snyder Cut for years before admitting it was real, and if they want the fervor around this to die down they should follow suit and release a new version of Suicide Squad, which will finally allow them to move forward. It will also buy them some much-needed karma points for allowing Ayer to take the fall for the first release.
