7 characters that Game of Thrones kind of forgot

Illyrio Mopatis

If you’ve only watched the show, then you may barely remember Illytio Mopatis. The magister of Pentos sheltered Daenerys and her older brother Viserys at the beginning of the story. He arranges the meeting between Dany and Khal Drogo. Illyrio attends their wedding and gives Daenerys her dragon eggs. He appears one more time when he and Varys discuss the Stark-Lannister conflict beneath the Red Keep. When Varys and Tyrion travel to Essos, they presumably stay at Ilyrio’s manse before setting out to meet Daenerys, but Illyrio himself never shows up.

While he does all that in the books, he’s also is a bigger player in the game of thrones who frequently collaborates with Varys. Together with Jon Connington, they conspire to install Aegon Targaryen, the son of Rhaegar, as the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.

There are theories that Aegon is a Blackfyre, descended from a line of illegitimate Targaryen children. While the show never explored the Blackfyres or including Jon and Aegon’s stories, we can expect to see more of Illyrio as his scheme continues to play out in The Winds of Winter.
