Fans of Doctor Who, especially the modern era, know exactly who Russell T. Davies is. He is the man behind the revival of the franchise in 2005 that brought in Christoper Eccleston as the Doctor and Billie Piper as his companion Rose Tyler, introducing the iconic series to a whole new generation.

And long before he brought Doctor Who back, Davies was a fan. Prior to ever working on the series, Davies wrote a Doctor Who script titled “Mind of the Hodiac” which was thought lost to time. But according to Gizmodo, Davies is getting the opportunity to resurrect this story through Big Finish as a Doctor Who audio adventure.

When did Davies’ write this lost Doctor Who script?

Davies wrote the script for “Mind of the Hodiac” back when Colin Baker was playing the Sixth Doctor and Bonnie Langford was playing his companion Melanie Bush, so Davies wrote it with them in mind. Now, nearly 35 years later, Baker and Langford will be able to bring the story to life with their voices.

At the time Davies wrote this script, he had only joined the BBC a year before. But at the time he was working as a graphic artist in the children’s programming department. Clearly he couldn’t stop himself from writing about Doctor Who. Talk about a true Whovian!

What is “Mind of the Hodiac” about?

Check out the official synopsis below:

"In the depths of space, the mysterious Hodiac is manipulating the Galactic Stock Exchange to raise money. His aim? To hire mercenaries for a deadly quest across the stars. Meanwhile, on Earth, an ordinary British family is plagued by a series of psychic events. The one thing connecting these events is a magnificent patchwork coat—which just so happens to belong to the Doctor!"

For someone who wasn’t officially part of the franchise yet, Davies did a pretty good job coming up with a story that feels very Doctor Who. A Galactic Stock Exchange? Mercenaries traveling across the stars? Sounds about right.

“Mind of the Hodiac” was originally intended to be a two-episode story, but it looks like Davies never got around to writing the second part. To complete it, Big Finish roped in Scott Handcock, who has written and directed Doctor Who audio dramas in the past. He will take it upon himself to finish the story based on Davies’ notes.

Fans will have to wait until March 2022 to listen to this story for the first time, but you can pre-order the digital download ($12.99) or the CD ($20.55) at Big Finish now.
