When you consider that fans have now been waiting over a decade to read the third book in Patrick Rothfuss’ Kingkiller Chronicle series, The Doors of Stone, it’s only natural that some false alarms have been rung. The biggest culprits are Amazon and other online bookstores that post placeholder release dates, which continue to irritate readers. In short: The Amazon release dates are not correct, and Rothfuss is still writing the much-anticipated novel.
Suffice it to say, when we do eventually get a release date, it’ll be a massive deal. No doubt Rothfuss will announce it himself, and that date will be shared everywhere across the web. The Doors of Stone will have anything but a quiet release. Before then, placeholder dates will likely keep popping up, but please don’t get carried away; they carry no real significance.
Perhaps the most well-known misleading release date came two years ago when Amazon listed the book as coming out on August 20, 2020. The news spread quickly, giving readers a false sense of hope. Of course, once that date rolled around…there was nothing.
This same thing happens pretty much every year. For instance, this year Amazon listed The Doors of Stone as releasing on July 8, which came and went with nothing.
What does Patrick Rothfuss think of these misleading release dates for The Doors of Stone?
These placeholder dates are annoying for everyone looking forward to the book. However, at least author Patrick Rothfuss sees the humorous side.
“That’s great. That’s gonna make my life a f–k ton easier. That means I can just buy it off Amazon and copy it and sent it to my publisher,” he joked during a live stream. “‘Hey everybody, I just got a bunch of free time.'”
Misleading release dates aside, Rothfuss has been more open about where he’s at with The Doors of Stone this year. It sounds like he’s making good progress. During his Twitch streams, he likes to answer fan questions, sometimes dropping hints about the upcoming novel.
As always, the wait for The Doors of Stone demands myriad patience. And now we’re also waiting for the 10th Anniversary Edition of The Wise Man’s Fear, a book that Rothfuss believes will arrive soon enough!
