Jason Momoa: “It’s killing me” that we’re not making Dune Part 2 yet

Director Denis Villeneuve and star Jason Momoa are both rearing to go on a sequel to Dune…but it depends on how the first movie does.

The reviews are out for Dune, and whether critics love it or not, they agree that it’s something worth seeing. Hopefully fans will see the same way when the movie comes out later this year, because that’s likely the only way that director Denis Villeneuve will get to make his follow-up.

You see, Dune only tells one half of the story from Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi classic. To wrap it up, there needs to be a Part 2 (or even a trilogy that adapts the second book, if Villeneuve has his way). Villeneuve hasn’t gotten the go-ahead yet, but he told IGN that he’s ready. “To go quickly in a movie of that size, you still need to make sets, costumes, so we are talking about months,” he said. “But if ever there’s enthusiasm and the movie is greenlit sooner than later, I will say that I will be ready to shoot in 2022 for sure. I am ready to go, and I will say that I would love to bring it to the screen as soon as possible.”

That said, Villeneuve wouldn’t rush to get the second movie out, since you need time to tell a heavy story like this properly. “The first film, I really had time to make sure that it was exactly the way I wanted it to be,” he said. “I would love to have the same feeling when I make the second part. That would be the priority. Quality will be the priority.”

"The tough task [in the first movie] was to introduce you guys to the world, the audience to this world, to the codes, to the culture, the different families, the different planets. Once this is done, it becomes an insane playground. It will allow me to go berserk."

And Villeneuve isn’t the only one itching to get going on the second movie. Game of Thrones veteran Jason Momoa plays Atreides family swordmaster Duncan Idaho, and sounded just as antsy talking to Collider.

“I’m excited to see the rest of it,” Momoa said. “I mean, I’ve only seen half of it.”

"It’s killing me that we have to wait a year and it’s killing me that they’re not in production yet. It’s like, ‘Guys, we’ve gotta go.’"

Dune comes out in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22. As for Part 2, time will tell.
