Lucifer 601 — “Nothing Ever Changes Around Here”
The beautiful thing about Lucifer is that after six seasons the writers and the showrunners know where the show’s strengths are, and at the heart of it Lucifer is a show about a detective and the Devil working together.
After the thrilling season 5 finale, it felt like Lucifer would be installed in heaven and ready to rule by the time season 6 rolled around. Instead the show pumps the brakes in the season 6 premiere and takes the audience back to the show’s roots. With a few tiny exceptions, of course.
Episode 601 opens with what was supposed to be a relaxing date commemorating Lucifer and Chloe’s final days on Earth before heading to heaven. Lucifer decides that a show at LA’s famed Magic Palace is the perfect way to celebrate, but a murder turns the plan upside down.
At this point, neither Chloe nor Lucifer work for the LAPD anymore, so they have to sit on the sidelines as Ella and Carol arrive to work the case. But you can’t keep a detective and a Devil from an investigation for too long, and soon Lucifer and Chloe are busy working angles behind Carol’s back.
While Chloe and Lucifer enjoy their date, Maze and Eve join Amenadiel and Linda for dinner. There’s some tension between Maze and Eve, and Linda, ever the therapist, tries to get to the bottom of it. It turns out that Eve isn’t very keen on ruling hell with Maze, and once the truth is in the open the couple is finally able to express how they really feel. They wind up engaged by the end of the meal.
I loved this episode because it’s classic Lucifer. Chloe and Lucifer are at their best when they’re working on a case, and seeing them in their element is always fun. What makes this case even more special is that it comes at a pivotal moment for the characters and their relationship. The war is over, Lucifer is God and heaven is waiting, but he’s still on Earth. Why?
It’s also a very important episode for Carol, played to perfection by Scott Porter. In the second half of season 5, after her disastrous relationship with a serial killer, Dan told Ella he wanted her to meet his friend in the second half of season 5 after her disastrous relationship with a serial killer. They ended up connecting at Dan’s funeral, and there are definitely some sparks between them, even if they’re just tiny embers at this point.
The Lucifer season 6 premiere is pure Lucifer fun. Though heaven is waiting, Lucifer makes it clear that heaven can wait.
