If Netflix is hoping to capture the charm of Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender with its upcoming live-action adaptation, the streamer is off to a promising start. Much of what made the animated series so successful was its characters. And the recently announced main cast seems to have both the chemistry and knowledge of the series to bring them to life.

That was underscored during an Instagram Live between Dallas Liu and Ian Ousley, who will play Prince Zuko and Sokka respectively. Although their characters take some time to warm to one another in the original series, the duo already appears to be good friends.

Their Instagram discussion gave fans a glimpse of what they can expect from Zuko and Sokka when Netflix’s live-action adaptation finally arrives. They also make references to original Last Airbender, a surefire sign that they’re fans of the source material. That’s something Liu already alluded to during the red carpet for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, when he noted how important it was to do right by the fans.

“That’s rough, buddy” is a fan-favorite Zuko-Sokka exchange from the original show. For reference:

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender stars begin filming later this year

Although Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender recently cast stars like Liu and Ousley alongside Gordon Cormier as Aang and Kiawentiio as Katara, there’s no word on when we’ll finally see them on-screen together.

According to Hollywood North Buzz, the show will begin filming in Vancouver in November. Optimistically, that means the series could arrive in late 2022. Until then, there’s plenty of content from the original series and The Legend of Korra to watch, not to mention the upcoming, unrelated animated projects from Nickelodeon’s Avatar Studios to look forward to.
