Marvel Studios’ first animated project, What If…? saw The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) take fans on a tour across the vast multiverse to learn what could have happened if events in the franchise were slightly altered. We saw everything from zombies to the formation of The Guardians of the Multiverse — a superhero team like no other.

If you thought things couldn’t get any wilder, head writer A.C. Bradley reveals that season 2 will continue to take the franchise to unique places the movies never could. “We should be as free as can be and go and run into the wild,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

Most of the events that took place in season one dealt with moments earlier on in the movies, like Peggy Carter taking the super-soldier serum. In season 2, we can expect interesting twists on events that occurred during Phase 4 movies.  “Going into the second season, we’re sticking with anthology form,” she said. “And it’s going to be all-new stories, lots of fun, new heroes, and pulling more from Phase 4 than we were obviously able to this season. Hopefully, we’ll see hints of Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Black Widow characters.”

Moreover, she expresses how joyful an experience it is to rewrite events in the MCU to provide fans with fascinating new takes. How one detail can change the shape of the entire universe:

"The fun of What If…? is that we get to explore the entire infinite multiverse, so we try and bounce around as much as we can. I want to play with all these characters, and as much as I love Captain Carter, we’ve got to share the love. I’m very excited to show new worlds, new heroes."

While season 1 focused on chronicling events that put the fate of the world (and even the multiverse) at stake, season 2 will tone down the carnage slightly. Instead, it will “focus a lot more on the character stories and these heroes and showing a different side of them that people don’t expect and hopefully they can relate to.”

At the end of the day, this show isn’t supposed to be like one of the huge movies. Or as Bradley puts it, “We’re not a show that’s designed to set up Avengers 5,” she said. Rather, she likes to have the freedom to tell stories that overwise would never be told, whatever they entail:

"It’s supposed to be just about entertainment and what these heroes mean to us. When I took the job, one of my rules was let’s be free. We’re in the multiverse — we should be as free as can be and go and run into the wild, into the stories the movies will never do, into the stories the TV shows will never do, and show both Disney and the fans all the possibilities of these characters."

A What If…? spinoff with Chadwick Boseman was planned before his death

One thing What If…? provided for fans was the late Chadwick Boseman’s final performance as King T’Challa as a voice actor. In the show, he got to learn what would’ve happened if he became Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill. Speaking to Variety, director Bryan Andrews revealed that a Star-Lord T’Challa spinoff was being talked about prior to his death.

“I don’t know if he knew this, but there was planning to have Star-Lord T’Challa spin off into his own show with that universe and crew,” he said. “We were all very excited. We know he would have loved it, too. And then, you know, he passed, and so all that’s in limbo. So, who knows? Maybe one day.”

Even though that spinoff sounds amazing, let’s be thankful that we got another fantastic performance for Boseman. What If…? season 1 is currently streaming on Disney+.

Next. Kathryn Hahn is getting a WandaVision spinoff. dark
