Mark Hamill as Albus Dumbledore

When an alternative actor for Albus Dumbledore comes up, Sir Ian McKellen is usually the name that’s tossed around. And while we agree that the actor who played Gandalf would make a compelling Dumbledore, let us suggest another star from another well-loved genre series: Mark Hamill.

When the Harry Potter films first came out, Hamill wasn’t in the right age range to play Dumbledore — but now that he’s a bit older, we’d like to toss his name in for consideration. And it’s not just because we’d love to see the former Star Wars actor tackle a Harry Potter adaptation (though we really, really would).

The Last Jedi showed us that Hamill is more than capable of playing an eccentric mentor, as that’s exactly the role he takes on while training Rey on Ahch-To. The quirkiness he exhibited there is exactly the kind of thing he needs to pull off a believable Dumbledore. Even his bitterness as the aging Jedi could work for Dumbledore’s bitterness over his falling out with Grindelwald and his unhappiness with the Ministry of Magic.

Plus, we all know that Hamill can make a memorable exit, which, as Dumbledore, he’ll eventually need to do.
