Marvel movies are happy to take us back into the past. We’ve seen World War II from Steve Rogers’ eyes. We’ve seen the ’90s from Carol Danvers’ eyes. And now, with Marvel’s Eternals, we’ll be going all the way back to the creation of the universe itself.

This was revealed in a clip that Marvel released this week about Eternals, which comes out on November 5. The film, which catalogs the lives of a group of extraterrestrial beings who have guarded Earth for many millennia, will cover a long stretch of time. As Marvel boss Kevin Feige says at the beginning of the video, “Eternals explores the very creation of the Marvel universe itself.” Next, Nate Moore reveals that the film “very much deals with the aftermath of Avengers 4 and the state the world is in.”

Not only that, but later in the clip, the character Sprite (Lia McHugh) says that they’re at the end of the world, and that they get to witness it with front-row seats. So just from this one featurette, we see Eternals will probably have the broadest scope of any Marvel movie we’ve seen thus far.

Marvel’s Eternals are larger than life

In the Marvel Comics universe, there are many cosmic beings whose actions are intertwined with the lives of our heroes. And I, for one, am excited to find out how the Eternals themselves fit into this newly created narrative within the MCU.

There are so many mysteries in the MCU that go beyond our practical world — vibranium, the Infinity Stones, the mystic arts — and by looping in the Eternals, we’re bound to get some answers as to why most regular humans have been shielded from these supernatural elements for so long.

We’ll also see if the Eternals ever reveal themselves to the Avengers. We know they’ve steered clear of disastrous events up until this point, from Loki’s invasion of Earth to Ultron and Thanos. But now, do they sense that something far worse is on the horizon that they must get involved with? Our bets are either on Shang-Chi’s rings being part of that, the multiverse situation with Kang the Conqueror that’s about to break out, or something completely unseen that was caused by Thanos’ famous snap.

Either way, Phase 4 is taking Marvel to brand new heights. And it’s exciting to see that the Eternals are going to be a huge component of this growing universe.
