2. Let’s dive into the Governor’s past!

Philip Blake, aka “The Governor” (David Morrissey), was the first antagonist on The Walking Dead to manage a large community of his own, with an army and everything. His ambitions to seize the prison from Rick’s group caused a war between the communities that spanned seasons 3 and 4. He was a brutal, crazy maniac, the type of guy you couldn’t predict. And he also has a whole lot of backstory that the TV show didn’t explore.

The backstory of Philip Blake was chronicled in a series of books written by Jay Bonansinga. They were written within the comic book continuity, although they could easily be streamlined to fit into the TV universe. The books tackle all sorts of unanswered questions, from how Philip lost his daughter Penny to how Woodbury was formed. It even stretched ahead into how Woodbury fared after his death. There’s so much story to bring to the screen.

The big question is whether David Morrissey would be willing to reprise his role as Philip Blake. Of course, if he isn’t willing, we could always get a new actor in the role of a younger Governor, but it’d be hard to imagine anyone but Morrissey doing justice to it.
