21. Into the Badlands

Imagine if Mad Max and oldschool Kung Fu movies had a baby, and you’ve got a decent idea of what to expect from our next show, Into the Badlands. Set in a post-apocalyptic United States, Badlands is awash with crazy fight scenes, dangerous marauders, and cruel plantation owners out to exploit the survivors of this wasteland for their own gain.

Into the Badlands stars Daniel Wu as Sunny, an overseer working for one of the local barons who crosses paths with a mysterious young man named M.K. (Aramis Knight). M.K. comes from beyond the Badlands, a place where supposedly no one lives due to the dangers of the post-apocalyptic landscape. Learning that there’s more to his world than he’d dared to hope inspires Sunny to step back from his brutal life and try to find a way to escape with his lover Veil (Madeleine Mantock) and their unborn child.

Of course, literally everything about the society in which he lives stands between Sunny and this goal. Quinn (Marton Csokas), the baron to whom Sunny owes allegiance, is not about to let his best killer leave his service. The Widow (Emily Beecham), leader of a rival gang, has a secret agenda that requires M.K., and a desire to see Quinn’s forces reduced to ruin. And the mysteries of M.K.’s origins and strange powers loom ever larger in the story, forcing all these dangerous factions into backstabbing ploys and wire-rigged martial arts showdowns. And at the center of it all, Sunny seeks for a way to live that doesn’t require him to shed rivers of blood.
