Disney puts out new Marvel movies with clockwork regularity, but its other big franchise — Star Wars — is a little more hit and miss. The last movie was 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, after which Disney has taken a little break to rethink things. It has a couple new movies in the hopper, including one helmed by Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi and another by Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige, but it’ll probably be a while before we see them.

The same goes for Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, a movie that will focus on the fighter pilots of the Star Wars universe. That one will be directed by Patty Jenkins, who helmed Wonder Woman. But taking on all these huge projects has its cost, as Deadline reports that filming on Rogue Squadron won’t start in 2022 as planned, as Jenkins needs time to work out her schedule. She’s also shooting Cleopatra for Paramount.

All that said, the release date for Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is still December 22, 2023, so it doesn’t look like this has hurt them too much…at least not yet.

Star Wars is as big as ever, just not on the big screen

Also, just because Star Wars has been absent at the box office for a couple of years doesn’t mean it’s keeping a low profile. Instead, its shifted its focus to TV; The Mandalorian was arguably the first must-see TV series for the Disney+ streaming service, and Disney has a lot more where that came from, including a series about Obi-Wan Kenobi, one about Ahsoka Tano, and more.

But there is something about seeing Star Wars on the big screen. One day it’ll be back in a huge way and it’ll feel like it never left, mark my words.
