Doctor Who: Flux is airing its third episode this Sunday, which will bring us to the halfway point of this six-episode storyline, believe it or not. According to executive producer Matt Strevens, who recently spoke with Doctor Who Magazine, it’s going to be quite the “ambitious” episode…and takes some notes from Marvel’s storytelling playbook.

“For me, it was reminiscent of some of the shows that I love – of the way that Marvel Studios are telling stories; the way they’ll parcel out the information, and things can seem incredibly random and abstract, but they’re not in the end,” said Strevens. “They’re part of a very cohesive whole, but you don’t get served straight away.”

The way Marvel has unveiled its world over the last decade or so is something we all love and admire. Events that are taking place now were teased way back when, and though the wait was long, it was all worth it in the end. And now it looks like Doctor Who will be following suit but in its own special way!

Doctor Who: Flux takes the series in a new direction

This Sunday’s upcoming episode, “Once, Upon Time”, will be especially interesting. “In terms of form, and structure, especially in Chapter Three – [it] really does take the show in a new direction,” Strevens said. “It’s very ambitious, and it credits the audience with sophistication and intelligence. Which is something we always do, of course, but with this, it’s very much asking you to trust the show and go on a ride. Not everything is given to you in the moment. As with a lot of television now, it credits the audience with a degree of patience – that they’re not going to know quite what’s going on.”

Flux, which features one overarching story told across six episodes, is the first of its kind for the series. Showrunner Chris Chibnall talked about how this changes things for the show. “You couldn’t tell this particular story, with this particular structure, in any other season of Doctor Who,” he said. “We’re using the shape of a serial to give us a very different type of storytelling.”

Any other Whovians freaking out about this ambitious endeavor?!

“Once, Upon Time” will take the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) on a tour through the aftermath of an apocalypse that was not supposed to happen. We’ve already seen iconic villains like the Sontarans and the Weeping Angels make their epic return over the last two episodes, and there is still plenty more to come. (Hello, Cybermen!)
