Grant Gustin talks The Flash/Batwoman team-up in season 8 crossover
By Ariba Bhuvad
The Flash is kicking off its eighth season with a five-episode crossover event titled “Armageddon.” It’s been two years since we got the last big Arrowverse crossover in the form of “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” which closed out the story on Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow. It was an event like no other that roped in characters from all over the DC Universe, including the Titans, the Doom Patrol, and even Lucifer Morningstar!
I’m not sure how “Armageddon” is going to live up to that, but they’ve got a promising group of superheroes involved. Unlike past crossovers, this one will be confined just to The Flash, and the story of “Armageddon” will play out over the course of season 8.
The Flash and Ryan Wilder share the screen for the first time
After navigating through a maze of COVID-19 protocols, The Flash was finally able to get multiple DC superheroes across the Arrovverse to participate in this epic crossover event. But more importantly, this event marks the first time that Barry Allen/The Flash (Grant Gustin) and Ryan Wilder/Batwoman (Javicia Leslie) will be onscreen together. The Flash has met Batwoman before, but at the time she was still played by Ruby Rose.
Gustin spoke with Entertainment Weekly about finally getting to work with Leslie. “Without spoiling too much, it’s not going to be what everybody would expect,” the actor said. “By the time we’ve crossed paths on the show, it’s not going to be a typical Flash and Batwoman team-up, I think is all I can really say. It was great having Javicia on set, great working with her… But, it’s not going to be the Flash-Batwoman team-up, per se, that people are probably expecting.”
Does that mean they are going to be enemies? What does Gustin mean?! I guess we’ll have to tune in to see how this plays out.
Showrunner Eric Wallace’s also commented on Batwoman’s involvement in the crossover. “I could not tell Armageddon as a story in five parts without Black Lightning [Cress Williams] and Batwoman,” he said. “They had to be in this story. I was actually sweating bullets, quite frankly, early on because I didn’t know if I would be able to get them, especially Javicia, who is shooting her own show as the lead while trying to do our show. We had to pull off a logistics nightmare, but we did it. We did it so well that quite frankly — Javicia is amazing in this — she ended it by saying, ‘Hey can I come back? I just want to be in more of this.’ To which I replied, ‘You are welcome any time, ma’am.’”
It’s quite impressive that despite the restrictions COVID-19 has put on productions, they were able to pull off a crossover event at all. However, since these protocols have become the norm, productions have become more proficient at handling logistical nightmares. I mean, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow just aired their 100th episode and managed to bring back all the OG actors to reprise their roles.
The “Armageddon” event kicked off last night and gave fans the first chapter in this five-part story, and without spoiling too much, I’ll say it’s off to quite a promising start. Even Wallace can’t contain his enthusiasm about the whole thing as he so conveyed to EW. “One of the most special scenes in Armageddon coming up is a scene that involves Batwoman and one other character that shall remain nameless,” Wallace enthused. “I believe it’s the kind of scene our audience has been waiting years to see and we finally got it. I can’t wait to share it with the audience. I can’t wait!”
We can’t wait either!
