It’s been eight years since the finale of Dexter hit Showtime, dividing the fanbase with its unexpected (and honestly, pretty dull) ending. The series, like many shows, faced a whole lot of backlash for the way it concluded, but the story of the serial killer vigilante has the chance for redemption now.

The new revival miniseries, titled Dexter: New Blood, premiered earlier this month, and so far people are finding it decent. Though the title character is now living in a new location with a brand new identity, the tone and overall feel of the show is just the same as the original. So if the fanbase is happy with New Blood, many might be wondering about its future.

Dexter: New Blood is being billed as a miniseries, but that title hasn’t stopped other shows from continuing beyond season 1. Star Michael C. Hall seemed happy to return to his most iconic role, and we’re sure fans would be happy for the story to continue. Should we expect a second season?

Is Dexter: New Blood renewed for season 2?

At the time of this writing, Dexter: New Blood season 2 has not been announced. As reported by Distractify, however, there have been discussions about the possibility.

Earlier this month, Showtime CEO David Nevins was asked by Deadline if he was “swearing” by New Blood only being one season, to which he replied:

"Well, no, I don’t swear at all. I don’t swear off anything. You’ve been asking me for years what’s the story with Dexter? I went from ‘I don’t know, nothing’s happening’ to ‘Never say never’ to ‘Stay tuned’ to ‘I got something I like, now I got to get Michael (C. Hall) to like it, too.’"

As of now, it seems like if the first 10-episode run goes well, a second season could be in the cards. After all, it’s unlikely Showtime would just ignore high viewership if people continue to tune in. Deadline reported that 2.2 million people watched the New Blood premiere.

That said, Showtime entertainment president Gary Levine did make it seem like New Blood might be a one-off. Back in August at the Television Critics Association press tour, Levine said of New Blood: “For me, it’s revisiting Dexter and giving a proper finale for a brilliant series.” He and Hall were tight-lipped on the possibility of a second season or a spinoff series.

For now, the show’s future all up in the air. But I have a feeling this isn’t the last time we’ll be seeing Dexter Morgan.

New episodes of Dexter: New Blood will air every Sunday night on Showtime through January 2022.
