David Tennant may have put his days of time-traveling in the TARDIS behind him, but he’s still stepping back in time for the upcoming series Around the World in 80 Days. Based on Jules Verne’s 19th-century classic, this new show premieres in the United States in January 2022 on PBS.

Starring alongside Tennant are Ibrahim Koma (playing Jean Passepartout, Fogg’s valet) and Abigail Fix (Leonie Benesch, a journalist who covers Fogg’s journey).

David Tennant travels around the world as Phileas Fogg

Tennant will play Phileas Fogg himself, a wealthy Englishman determined to prove that he can travel around the world in 80 days. It’s a magnificently inspiring story and Tennant couldn’t be a more perfect match for the lead role. Naturally, the series has already been renewed for a second season ahead of the premiere.

Around the World in 80 Days has been adapted many times since Verne published the book back in 1873. The 1965 film was one of the most notable versions, snagging an Oscar for Best Picture.

This is just the start of Verne content from producers Slim Film + Television and Federation Entertainment. They’ll also be adapting Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, and that could just be the beginning. If you’re a Masterpiece/PBS junkie like me, you’re going to be tuning in for the long haul, especially with David Tennant involved in one of the projects.

Around the World in 80 Days premieres in the U.S. on PBS on Sunday, January 2, 2022, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
