The central mystery of the first season of The Wheel of Time is the identity of the Dragon Reborn, and it could be any one of our five central characters. Is it mild-mannered farm boy Rand, who can bust down a door without thinking about it? Is it Perrin, who can apparently communicate with wolves? Perhaps it’s Egwene, who has quickly taken to her Aes Sedai training? Or perhaps Nynaeve, who used the One Power to heal a group of injured people despite having no experience?

And then there’s Mat, who has been acting strange since the group left the haunted city of Shadar Logoth; he’s distant, gloomy and may not be in his right mind. Rand and Thom Merrilin found him in a farmhouse with the family living there dead. It looks like that was the work of a fade, but it’s not for sure. Perhaps Mat can channel and it’s driving him mad?

As it happens, we know what’s happening with Mat and where his story is going, because The Wheel of Time is based on Robert Jordan’s book series and the answers have been there for decades. If you’d like to know for yourself, read on, but beware SPOILERS.

The Wheel of Time: Is the Dragon Reborn Mat?

Let’s not beat around the bush: in the books, Mat is not the Dragon Reborn. He’s special, and there is something wrong with him, but he’s not the one.

So why is he acting all gloomy and creepy? Do you remember Mat taking a dagger from Shadar Logoth? It ends up he shouldn’t have done that. That whole city was infested with evil, and everything in it is better left where you found it. Mat has been dragging the evil of Shadar Logoth with him all this time, and it’s started to infect and change him.

With any luck, future episodes will show how, or whether, Mat gets out of this predicament. And of course, the true identity of the Dragon Reborn has yet to be revealed…
