Peter Dinklage calls Game of Thrones showrunners “brilliant storytellers”

Peter Dinklage remembers his time as Tyrion Lannister on Game of Thrones, and how the writing allowed him to show off many different sides of the character.

Peter Dinklage is currently making the press rounds promoting his new movie Cyrano, a musical based on the classic play Cyrano de Bergerac. Dinklage plays the title character, a lovelorn wordsmith too shy to approach his beloved Roxanne, so he woos her with his beautiful words through a proxy.

But of course, Dinklage is also asked about his time as Tyrion Lannister on Game of Thrones. It came up on a recent episode of British talk show Lorraine, hosted by Lorraine Kelly. Watch below:

Okay, before we get to the quote, can we discuss how absolutely miserable Dinklage looks here? Dinklage has never liked press very much, hence why you don’t see many interviews with him, and his dour energy couldn’t contrast more with that of the bubbly talk show, who is clearly a big fan of Game of Thrones.

Now that I’m done chuckling over that, here’s what he said about Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss:

"They just have a knack for brilliant storytelling, and sometimes more importantly for an actor, brilliant dialogue, especially in Tyrion’s case. It’s so smart, it’s so witty, and so funny. Cause he was always sort of the comic relief of the piece but not being marginalized to just being that."

We did indeed see a lot of different sides of Tyrion on the show, from drunken mess to put-upon son to proud Hand of the Queen to devastated coconspirator. It’s not the kind of role that comes along every day.

Cyrano opens in theaters on December 31.
