Shohreh Aghdashloo in talks to play Cadsuane on The Wheel of Time
By Daniel Roman
Never underestimate the power of fandom. Fan passion brought us things like Zack Snyder’s Justice League and an extra three seasons of The Expanse on Amazon Prime Video after it was cancelled by the Syfy Channel. Now, we may be witnessing another fan-led movement come to realization.
The first season of The Wheel of Time on Amazon has officially ended, and people are already talking about what comes next for the series, including dreamcasting some of the more iconic roles. One such example is Cadsuane, a legendary older Aes Sedai who comes into the series later on and who has a brusque, no nonsense way about her. Cadsuane was a mentor to characters like Moiraine and Siuan Sanche, so you can imagine what sort of powerful presence the sorceress — and the actress who portrays her — will need to possess.
As it turns out, the fans have been thinking about this, and they have the perfect casting for Cadsuane: Shohreh Aghdashloo, who plays Chrisjen Avasarala on The Expanse. The conversations about Aghdashloo playing Cadsuane were so numerous that the actor took notice on Twitter:
The plot thickens from there, with Aghdashloo tagging The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins about the possibility:
Judkins has been thinking of Aghdashloo for “a certain character,” eh? There are literally thousands of characters in The Wheel of Time, but considering what an important role Cadsuane plays and how spot-on this dreamcasting is, it’s hard to imagine who else it could be.
The conversation continues:
There you have it. Judkins and Aghdashloo are officially in talks, and Judkins thanks the fans for making it happen.
The Wheel of Time boss has Shohreh Aghdashloo in mind for “a certain character”
Aghdashloo seems perfect for this type of project. While she has garnered praise for her portrayal of savvy Earth politician Avasarala on The Expanse, she also appeared as Commodore Paris in Star Trek: Beyond and lent her incredible voice talents to Arcane as Sheriff Grayson, as well as to the Mass Effect and Destiny video games.
We may not get any official details for some time yet, though. It’s likely Cadsuane won’t show up until later seasons; her first appearance in the mainline series isn’t until book seven, A Crown of Swords. That said, she does take part in some important off-screen events in the earlier books, such as the capture of Logain and the wrangling of a second false Dragon named Mazrim Taim. Since The Wheel of Time show is already making some big changes from the source material, it feels like anything is on the table.
So who knows? Cadsuane may be coming sooner than anyone expected.
Season 1 of The Wheel of Time is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
