Alan Rickman knew Snape’s Harry Potter future before anyone else

“After all this time? Always.” That line will forever be seared into the mind of every Harry Potter fan. It was the moment Dumbledore learned Severus Snape still loved Lily Potter. In the years since her death, he opted to protect Lily’s son, the Harry Potter, although it rarely seemed that way to Harry himself.

In fact, throughout the books (and the movies), Snape was often depicted as a dark, brooding, evil character who absolutely hated Harry’s guts. However, it was out of his love for Harry’s mother that Snape chose to protect her son.

During the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special on HBO Max, it was revealed that the late Alan Rickman knew Snape’s secret all along. Admittedly, I needed a moment to gather myself after that revelation. It just made Rickman’s arc as Snape more beautiful and profound, didn’t it?

Alan Rickman knew Snape’s fate in Harry Potter early on

Apparently, not even Chris Columbus, the director of the first two Harry Potter films, knew about Snape’s future, according to Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter). Radcliffe went on to say that every time Rickman was asked about Snape’s fate he would say, “I’ll tell you later,” and he was one of the very few people who had the “inside line” into what was going to happen down the road.

Rickman had no qualms about asking Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling about Snape, and as it turned out, he succeeded in learning exactly what was to come. Honestly, that makes so much sense because “Always” is such a monumental moment for the franchise, and I think having known that was where Snape would eventually end up would help his performance. I can’t imagine what it was like for Rickman to finally bring that knowledge to life.
