The next Doctor Who special will be “absolutely spectacular”
By Ariba Bhuvad
Doctor Who has wrapped up its thirteenth and its New Year’s Day special, but we’ve still got two more specials to look forward to this year before Jodie Whittaker leaves the show and we meet the next Doctor. We still don’t know who will take on the role, but we do know that original showrunner Russell T. Davies will return to steer the ship starting in 2023.
As we wait for that to happen, I’m glad we can look forward to more time with Whittaker’s Doctor because I’m not quite ready to say goodbye just yet. When she stepped into this role a few years ago, she became the first woman ever to play the Doctor on-screen. It was a monumental moment and one that we continue to celebrate.
It’ll be hard to say goodbye, but let’s not think about that just yet. Instead, let’s talk about the upcoming Doctor Who special which will be a part of the BBC’s 100th Anniversary celebration. It is being teased as “absolutely spectacular” by the show’s visual effects editor, Emily Lawrence.
The Doctor Who Centenary special
While talking to Doctor Who Magazine, Lawrence revealed that the visual effects team is “in the thick of” working on the special. “I can’t give anything away, but I can tell you that it’s going to be an absolutely spectacular episode with a lot of visual effects,” she said.
When it comes to Doctor Who they don’t mess around with VFX so I cannot wait to see what they have in store. Maybe the Doctor will go against a team of villains in some galactic battle? And maybe, just maybe, former Doctors will pop in for cameos? One can hope, right?
The special is currently in post-production and is set to air in the spring. No official date has been announced, but you can bet we’ll be on the lookout for any updates. Until then, watch the New Year’s Day special, “Eve of the Daleks,” and enjoy these final precious moments we have with Whittaker. And with Mandip Gill (Yaz) and John Bishop (Dan), who are allegedly leaving the show too. Sigh, say it ain’t so.
