Andrew Garfield would return as Spider-Man “if it felt right”

The multiversal madness of Spider-Man: No Way Home brought the dreams of every Spider-Fan to life; the flick featured not only Tom Holland but also former web-slingers Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. For the first time since the movie premiered, Andrew Garfield has finally broken the silence on what it was like for him to reprise the role he last played in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. He also contemplates putting on the Spider-Suit again.

Marvel certainly seem to want Garfield back as Peter Parker. You need only look on Twitter, where the hashtag #MakeTASM3 ranks high on the trending page pretty much every day. While that might seem useless in the grand scheme of things, social media campaigns have been known to sway the opinions of executives. For instance, DC fans started the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement, which prompted Warner. Bros to fund Zack Snyder’s four-hour cut of Justice League on HBO Max, which was a big success.

Sure, there’s a big difference between getting a new cut of an existing movie and getting a whole new movie made from scratch, but it’s good to know that the fans are keen to make it happen. Hopefully, Sony obliges. Andrew Garfield is already on board with the idea, which is a massive step in the right direction. “I mean, yes, definitely open to something if it felt right,” he told Variety.

The actor explained how much the hero means to him, and what it would take for him to once again appear in a solo movie. “Peter and Spider-Man, those characters are all about service, to the greater good and the many,” Garfield said. “He’s a working-class boy from Queens that knows struggle and loss and is deeply empathetic. I would try to borrow Peter Parker’s ethical framework in that, if there was an opportunity to step back in and tell more of that story, I would have to feel very sure and certain in myself.”

Evidently, the chance to “tie up some loose ends” with his Peter Parker in No Way Home was an opportunity too good to pass up. “The pitch was really, really enticing,” Garfield remembered. “They said, ‘You played this character in your way and what would you want to explore if you had an opportunity? If you were dumped into this other universe and faced with this younger you and this older you, how will you respond?'”

That said, the pitch didn’t need to be overly complex, since “the idea of seeing three Spider-Men in the same frame was enough.”

The No Way Home line Andrew Garfield improvised

We all loved seeing how the three Spideys interacted with each other. Whether it was Tobey’s Spider-Man having a bad back or each of them explaining how their web-shooters work. But there was one moment in particular that won our hearts, where Garfield’s hero says “I love you guys” to Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Men, before going into battle. The line was wholesome, cute, and put a tear in our eyes. And according to Andrew Garfield, it was completely improvised.

“There’s a line I improvised in the movie, looking at and I tell them I love them,” he said. “That was just me loving them.”

I can imagine that’s just one of the interesting tidbits from the two weeks Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire spent filming the movie. We need a full behind-the-scenes video as soon as possible. In the meantime, I’m sure we could all do with watching No Way Home one more time.
