Game of Thrones is Reddit’s third favorite show of all time

During its eight seasons on TV, Game of Thrones wasn’t only considered the greatest show on television, but also firmly in the discussion of the greatest shows of all time. Now, almost three years since its divisive final season, the HBO fantasy continues to place highly on those “Greatest of all time” lists. Most recently, the people of Reddit spoke, and placed it in the Bronze position!

Before we get into the Redditor’s opinion of the greatest TV shows of all time, there is as always a caveat to consider. Despite the r/Television page having a crazy big 16.5 million users, the poll that resulted in this list only received 2,933 responses. Each voter was allowed to vote for 25 shows, accounting for 40,634 total votes for 1,883 different TV series. The turnout wasn’t as big as many hoped.

So how did things shake out? Here is Reddit’s top 10 shows:

1. Breaking Bad
2. The Expanse
3. Game of Thrones
4. The Wire
5. Succession
6. Community
7. Better Call Saul
8. Mr. Robot
9. Avatar: The Last Airbender
10. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

It’s not particularly surprising to see Breaking Bad sit at the top of the list. Similar to Thrones, the beloved crime drama is almost always cited as one of the best series ever made. Perhaps more interestingly, science-fiction series The Expanse comes in second place. Funnily enough, The Expanse is a show that’s been dubbed by many as “Game of Thrones in space.”

Unlike Google’s top trending shows, or Twitter’s top trending shows, or the most-pirated shows — there are no Marvel shows in Reddit’s top 10. Most likely, this is because we’re talking about “all-time,” rather than the last few years. Take a look at the top 10, followed by the 90 other shows that were mentioned:

It’s nice to see Avatar: The Last Airbender make the cut, too. Airing from 2005-2008 on Nickelodeon, the animated series has sustained an enormous fanbase over the years, and it just continues to get bigger. In fact, Netflix has ordered a live-action adaptation of the show, and things are looking very good so far!

Reddit’s favorite new shows of 2021

In terms of Reddit’s top ten shows of 2021, it’s a different story altogether. Netflix’s League of Legends animated series Arcane leaps past global sensation Squid Game to claim the crown. And yes, there are plenty of superheroes involved, and not just from Marvel; Amazon Prime’s animated hit Invincible reaches #5. Three of Disney+’s five MCU shows this year also feature. Take a look at the top 10 below:

It’s been a breakout year for Hailee Steinfeld in particular, who played Vi in Arcane and Kate Bishop in Hawkeye. As for the greatest show of all time for women specifically, Game of Thrones also creeps in at #10 while The Expanse completely blows it out of the water in first place.

What will we see on this list next year? Netflix’s The Sandman? Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings? Marvel’s Moon Knight? Perhaps House of the Dragon can replicate the success of Game of Thrones? I mean, George R.R. Martin has seen the premiere and he’s very impressed so far.
