The Witcher: Blood Origin — Netflix — 2022

Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings aren’t the only fantasy franchises getting the prequel treatment this year. Netflix has its own high fantasy hit with The Witcher, starring Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. Now, the streaming service is hard at work expanding The Witcher universe with spinoffs and specials. We already got an animated Witcher movie called Nightmare of the Wolf, and in 2022 we’ll see the live-action prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin.

Blood Origin is set 1,200 years before the main series and will explore an event known as the Conjunction of the Spheres. This was when multiple worlds (or spheres) overlapped, and elves, monsters, humans, and any number of other races were stranded on the Continent.

The Conjunction was mentioned quite a few times in The Witcher season 2, likely in part to set up this spinoff. Blood Origin stars Michelle Yeoh, and while I never knew I needed Michelle Yeoh to play a badass elf warrior, now that I’ve seen the trailer there’s no doubt that she’s the hero 2022 needs.

A teaser for Blood Origin was attached to the end credits of The Witcher’s season 2 finale, which confirmed that the prequel will be coming to Netflix this year. Considering that the show wrapped filming in November and that it has a smaller six-episode run, it could drop anytime. — Daniel
