Resident Evil — Netflix — 2022
We’ll also be getting a very different Netflix series in 2022: Netflix’s live-action Resident Evil series. Based on the classic survival horror video games of the same name, Resident Evil will tell the story of a zombie outbreak that threatens to end the world, courtesy of a virus created by the nefarious pharmaceutical giant the Umbrella Corporation. In no particular order, you should expect zombie people, zombie dogs, giant monsters, small monsters, monsters with long razor-sharp tongues, zombie spiders, and any number of other creatures.
There have been plenty of screen adaptations of Resident Evil in the past, most famously the six-film series starring Milla Jovovich and last year’s much more faithful Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. But where this new Resident Evil show gets interesting is in the characters it’s choosing to focus on: longtime franchise villain Albert Wesker and his two daughters.
The story will follow the Wesker family in two separate timelines: one where they move to Raccoon City, which is pretty much always ground zero for the outbreak in these stories, and one set 10 years later when the population of the world has been reduced to only 15 million people due to the zombie outbreak. Albert Wesker (played in the show by Lance Reddick) is often the one pulling the strings to thwart the heroes in the video game series, so for him and his children to be the focus of their own series is a really interesting twist.
Netflix has confirmed that Resident Evil will be getting a 2022 release, but little else about the show is known at this point. — Daniel
