Every sci-fi and fantasy show you should watch in 2022

The Nevers season 1, part 2 — HBO — 2022
The Nevers is an ambitious period drama about a group of people in Victorian London — mostly women — who are granted extraordinary abilities when a mysterious alien craft flies over the city…although only a couple people know that’s what happened. The series is a strange beast, an expensive, earnest adventure that mixes comedy, drama, fantasy, sci-fi, history and superheroics, all of it anchored by a layered performance from Laura Donnelly as Amalia True.
Even if production on the show had gone off without a hitch, The Nevers would be a hard sell to the masses, and production did not go off without a hitch. To start, The Nevers was hit badly by the pandemic, resulting in HBO only filming half of the proposed 10-episode first season. We ended up getting six episodes, and now we’re going to get six more to see where this wild tale goes next.
Then there’s the fact that the show was created by The Avengers director Joss Whedon, who was essentially banished from show business after a series of scandals came to light. With so many problems I wondered if HBO would just cut its losses with The Nevers, but they hired British screenwriter Philippa Goslett to replace him as showrunner and moved on.
Filming on the remaining episodes of The Nevers wrapped by the end of 2021, so it’ll be along sometime this year; we just don’t know quite when. — Dan
