Willow — Disney+ — 2022
Disney is very fond of reviving and repackaging its old movies and shows in new forms, and it doesn’t look like it’ll be slowing down any time soon. Hence we’re getting Willow, a TV version of the 1988 film of the same name starring Warwick Davis as an aspiring sorcerer who finds himself protecting a baby from a tyrannical queen.
The new series will pick up decades later, will Willow Ufgood now an established sorcerer about to go on a new quest: a princess is assembling a party to help her rescue her twin brother, and she needs Willow’s expertise.
As in the original film, Willow will travel with a motley band of adventures, although so far there’s no sign that Val Kilmer will return as the mercenary swordsman Madmartigan, although he shared top billing in the 1988 movie. There are some things even Disney’s money can’t tempt an actor to do, although I wouldn’t be surprised if Kilmer at least turned up for a cameo or something.
If House of the Dragon will provide us with the dark fantasy we want in 2022, and The Lord of the Rings the fantasy series you can watch with the whole family, perhaps Willow will be aimed more at the younger set. The series is confirmed to be heading to Disney+ sometime this year, although we don’t know quite when. — Dan
