Russian Doll season 2 — Netflix — 2022
The first season of Russian Doll premiered on Netflix in 2021 and became a nice little sleeper hit. It’s about a software engineer named Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) who gets caught in a time loop on her 36th birthday, which also happens to be the day she dies. Think of it as Groundhog Day for millennials.
During her adventure, she runs into Alan (Charlie Barnett), who’s in a very similar situation. They help each other figure things out, and the show ends with them preventing each other’s deaths and meeting in an alternate, pre-loop timeline where they become friends.
The show left plenty of mysteries unresolved, so there’s lots of room to explore in a second season; the producers (who include Lyonne, Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler) have said that they have plans for a third and final season beyond that. And Barnett has said that Russian Doll season 2 is “very different” from the first go-round. Are there no time loops this time around? Are there more time loops? The public desperately wants to know.
Filming on Russian Doll season 2 was delayed by the pandemic, but it was still completed midway through 2021, so the show should have no trouble premiering in 2022. In fact, it’s odd that Netflix still hasn’t unveiled a release date or teaser or something. We would say that season 2 was a shoo-in for an early 2022 release, but until we hear more, we’re not committing. — Dan
