The Last Kingdom never had the penetration of Game of Thrones. It was never as popular as Vikings, but this medieval history series (based on author Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories books) has been quietly plugging away at Netflix for four seasons now, and has rarely been less than excellent.
The Last Kingdom tells the tell of Uhtred, a dispossessed nobleman determined to reclaim his ancestral seat of Bebbanburg, even if he has to work for a line of insufferable kings to do it.
The upcoming fifth season of The Last Kingdom will be its last (basically, more on that below). Unfortunately, Netflix has yet to announce a release date. At least we know season 5 is coming out sometime this year.
Netflix hasn’t announced a release date for The Last Kingdom season 5 yet
From what we can tell, filming on The Last Kingdom season 5 has been done for a while, and Netflix is regularly releasing character posters with accompanying quotes on its Twitter page. So the new episodes are on their way, the streamer is just being cagey about the details.
But we’d expect a release date soon. And even though season 5 is the last for the series, there is a movie coming out later: Seven Kings Must Die, which is a great title. This movie will cover the last couple books in Bernard Cornwell’s saga and come out sometime after season 5.
