Back in October 2021, we shared reports of Rick Cosnett (Eobard Thawne) returning for The Flash season 8. I’m happy to report that it is officially happening, according to Deadline.

You may recall that Eddie gave up his life back in the show’s first season to prevent the rise of Eobard Thawne/Reverse Flash from rising. Since then, he showed up randomly in seasons 2 and 3; on a superhero series, death is no big obstacle.

We’ll see Cosnett in the final three episodes of season 8 as he “embodies different characters.” I’m not sure what that means. Maybe he’ll be different Eobard Thawnes from different Earths? Or is that not possible anymore because of the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline? Whatever happens, I’m so excited to see Rick Cosnett return.

How will Eobard Thawne (Rick Cosnett) return to The Flash?

In a statement, executive producer and showrunner Eric Wallace shared what we can expect from Cosnett’s return. “Rick’s been such a fantastic part of our Flash family since Season 1. And we have been looking for ways to bring him back to the show ever since,” he said. “Fortunately, we’ve been able to do so now in Season 8. And Rick has been fantastic in bringing an exciting new side to his portrayal of Eddie Thawne that honors the character’s past but also takes it somewhere unexpected.”

Now, we don’t know if Cosnett’s return will last beyond the eighth season. But we do know that Grant Gustin recently signed on to do 15 more episodes. If the show does get a season 9, The Flash will become the longest-running Arrowverse series.

I hope Cosnett’s return marks a turning point for a series that has been struggling for some time. I guess we’ll see how that plays out when season 8 returns on Wednesday, March 9 on The CW.

Oh, and don’t forget that Bart (Jordan Fisher) and Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy) are going to be showing up from the future to keep an eye on their parents! I definitely cannot wait for that either!
