It sounds like HBO’s True Blood reboot has stalled out

A little over a year ago, we heard that HBO was in the early stages of rebooting True Blood, the Netflix’s trashy-but-fun series about vampires trying to integrate themselves into human society. We’ve pretty much heard nothing since then, and now we know why: according to HBO executive Cases Bloys, nothing has really come of it, at least not so far.

Bloys has been out and about in the press lately, spilling lots of hot tea about Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon. But The Hollywood Reporter asked him about some other shows rumored to be in the pipeline, including the True Blood reboot. “There were a couple ideas in development but nothing has really come to the fore.”

That doesn’t mean we’ll never see a True Blood reboot, but I wouldn’t expect one anytime soon.

HBO not interested in reboots…mostly

In fact, Bloys was shooting down rumors of a lot of reboots and revivals. He downplayed reports of more Sopranos content, a follow-up to Girls and a revival of Six Feet Under. “Believe it or not I don’t my spend time thinking about what shows to reboot,” he said. “I do want to take a moment to make clear that we don’t spend our days thinking about what to reboot because it’s a tricky business bringing a show back.”

It’s true that pretty much all of HBO’s recent hits have been original series, from Mare of Easttown to The White Lotus to Succession to Euphoria. And I can’t help but read Bloys’ playful comments about reboots as a dig at other studios: think Peacock, which just revived The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as a drama; or of Disney, which has been trotting out remakes of its classic animated films for years. The only thing HBO has going right now in the sequel/reboot space is House of the Dragon, and that might be enough.

But again, it’s not like HBO never brings shows back. The Sopranos got a movie not long ago, and it’s just coming down from a Sex and the City revival. Still, I’m okay with them being a once-in-a-great-while kind of thing.
