10 fantasy books that haven’t been adapted as TV shows (but should be)
Girls of Paper, and Fire by Natasha Ngan
This Malaysian-inspired fantasy follows teenage girl Lei, a member of the Paper caste, the lowest and most persecuted class of people in Ikhara. She lives in a remote village with her father and is still haunted by the trauma of witnessing her mother being taken by the royal guards to an unknown fate.
Now the guards have returned, but this time it’s Lei they’re after. Taken to the Royal Palace, Lei and eight other girls learn the skills necessary to become consorts to the King. There Lei falls in love with one of the other girls, beginning a forbidden romance that will forever change Ikhara.
Girls of Paper and Fire could make for a truly amazing TV series.
Cinderella is Dead, by Kalynn Bayron
Cinderella is Dead follows Sophia Grimmins, a lesbian teenager living in the same world as Cinderella, 200 years after her death. These days, teenage girls are required to attend an Annual Ball where they are to be selected by the men of the kingdom as wives. If a suitable match is not found, the girls are then never seen or heard of again.
After making the desperate decision to flee, Sophia meets Constance, the last living relative of Cinderella. Together, they vow to bring down the system once and for all.
This sapphic Cinderella story would make for a great TV show or movie.
