Review: Attack on Titan sets up dominos in “Sunset”
There’s a lot going on in Attack on Titan now that Eren has taken the power of the Founding Titan and begun the Rumbling. The Wall Titans now march towards their targets and many players in the game are left scrambling over what to do next. With so many teams and objectives, it’s anyone’s guess how our characters will act, if they can even summon the courage to do so. We see them take their first steps in this week’s episode, “Sunset.”
Not too much to say about this episode. It’s not bad, but nothing momentous happens; it’s very clear that this episode’s objective is to set up dominos to topple in the future. And with so many characters and so many of them separated, that takes a while and we don’t have much room left over for a full story to be told this week.
“Sunset” is important, but has little rewatch value. Is it enjoyable? Yeah, I’d say so, if only because of the shock of some of the twists and turns, but that sort of stuff only works once.
Attack on Titan marches slowly forward in “Sunset”
Let’s get into it: with Eren removing the power of Titan hardening, Annie is now free from her self-made prison and has an unexpected reunion with Hitch. This is the longest sequence in the episode, and it starts off exciting as Annie and Hitch fight one another for control of the situation. Annie prevails on Hitch to help her escape from Trost District, where we get a bit of Annie’s backstory. It’s okay, but not anything particularly interesting, although it does reveal Annie’s motivation for wanting to return home.
The rest of the episode consists of one-off scenes and story updates on many of the major and minor characters in this conflict. Eldians back on Marley are trying to tell their oppressors of their collective premonition, Armin makes plans to stop Conny from feeding Falco to his mother, Floch executes noncompliant members of Zeke’s Volunteers, and so on.
Although these scenes are short, it is nice getting updates on everyone’s locations and new objectives. There are also a few welcome surprises that I’m sure will be a sign of relief for viewers; I know they were for me.
That’s all for this episode. Not too exciting, but hey, it wasn’t suppose to me. Buildup is important to a satisfying conclusion, after all. Hitchcock would have loved this episode, I’m sure.
Grade: C+
