The Last Kingdom producers discuss ending the series right

Stunt co-ordinator Levente Lezsák: “We have three big battles” in The Last Kingdom season 5
Describe your role as stunt co-ordinator on The Last Kingdom.
I’m responsible for all the action sequences in The Last Kingdom world. So if we have a battle
sequence, or if we have fight choreography, or if we have any kind of stunt related to horses,
I have to look after safety, and I have to create all these sequences, and I have to put the
logistics behind all these scenes and sequences.
What can audiences can expect in season five?
We have three big battles in this season. I’m very happy, because the battle sequences are
not, you know, on a big open field, the tricky thing is to make a battle, in a town, or in a city,
for example. We had a big battle to place in a camp, which made the whole battle very busy
and dense, and we filled that with action. I think the audience will love it, because we loved it. And I can’t wait for the last big battle. I just read the script, and I have the storyboards, and
I’m so excited to do that one. So I think for season five, we will be able to give you a nice
finale, and a big firework at the end of the show.
Describe working with the actors on The Last Kingdom.
It’s always a creative process, but it’s an easy one, especially on this show. The guys love all
this stuff. I think it comes from inside. And they really love to do their own stunts and fights
and everything. Actually, I never use doubles for them in the fight scenes. Only when they do
really heavy or dangerous stunts, but normally they do all their own stunts, and they are really
good. They have lots of ideas, and we can build those ideas into the fights.
Does each character have their own fighting style?
Over the years, every character has his own style, and now I know, okay, if I’m planning a fight
for Finan, I know how it should be. Or with Sigtryggr – Arnas – it’s more acrobatic, and he has
a more choreographed style. Finan is more like from a Guy Ritchie movie. Uhtred has a more
elegant style… but you know he is the warrior, so I cannot make him too acrobatic.
What was it like working with Alexander Dreymon?
With Alex, it’s really great to work with him, because he has really clear ideas for what he
wants to do, and I think he really feels his character, and he really knows in this situation, or
in this scene, where he wants to go, and this fight, how it should happen, or how it should
serve his character, and the development of his character. And it helps me a lot. So we used
to sit down, and we used to break down the script together, and we used to look through all
his fights, and work out together all the beats, and it’s really great, it’s great to work with him.
