John Stahl, who played Rickard Karstark on Game of Thrones, has died at the age of 68.

John Stahl played Rickard Karstark in the second and third seasons of Game of Thrones, taking over the role from Steven Blount. A nobleman in service to the Robb Stark, Karstark split with the King in the North after Catelyn Stark let Jaime Lannister go even after Jaime killed Rickard’s son. It was a memorable, messy arc carried by Stahl’s strong performance.

Unfortunately, Stahl’s agent Amanda Fitzalan announced the other day that the actor has passed away at the age of 68, per Deadline. Fitzalan called Stahl “an actor of remarkable skill and a stalwart of Scottish theatre” in a statement. “He died on the [Scottish] Isle of Lewis on March 2 2022 and is survived by his wife, Jane Paton.”

Before getting on Game of Thrones, Stahl was best known for playing Tom “Inverdarroch” Kerr on the long-running Scottish soap opera Take the High Road. He was on the show from 1982 until it ended in 2003. He was also on the TV show Being Human. In addition to the TV work, Stahl appeared in numerous stage productions, including at The Royal Shakespeare Company and The National Theatre in London.

John Stahl may not have had a huge role on Game of Thrones, but he’s proof that you don’t need to have a ton of screen time to make an impact. Our best to his family and friends.
