How many episodes are in The Last Kingdom season 5?

The final season of The Last Kingdom is now live on Netflix. It’s been a long and winding road for Uhtred son of Uhtred, the Saxon who was raised by Danes after being exiled from his home fortress of Bebbanburg. But finally, Uhtred’s journey is coming to an end…at least for now. Netflix is currently working on a “standalone” Last Kingdom movie set after this season, so we’ll be getting one more outing with Uhtred and company.
The Last Kingdom season 5 wraps up many of the show’s longest standing plotlines, including Uhtred’s tumultuous relationship with his childhood friend Brida, the fate of Bebbanburg, and Edward’s ambitions to see his father Alfred’s dream of a united England fulfilled. We won’t spoil how all those things worked out here, but we’ve discussed them at length in our full season 5 review.
If you’re still digging into The Last Kingdom’s final season or have been thinking about starting it, you might be wondering how many episodes there are. We’re here to break that down for you.
How many episodes in season 5 of The Last Kingdom?
Like seasons 3 and 4, the final season of The Last Kingdom has a grand total of 10 episodes. It covers approximately two books of Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories series, Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer, as well as some elements from the 11th novel War of the Wolf. The Last Kingdom has never been a straight one-to-one adaptation of the novels, and instead has combined many plotlines into a more condensed story better suited for TV.
The result is undeniable. The 10 episodes which make up The Last Kingdom season 5 are as strong as ever. Even though they don’t truly end the tale of Uhtred, they bring the show to a close in a very satisfying and full circle way.
For the actual ending, we’ll have to wait until The Last Kingdom sequel movie Seven Kings Must Die is released on Netflix. It currently has no release date, but filming wrapped on the movie in late March. This is a good sign that we may see it sooner than we expect.
