House of the Dragon is HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel show. Set some 200 years before the story we know, it tells the tale of the Dance of the Dragons, a brutal Targaryen civil war that tore Westeros apart.

We’ve know for a while that the show was coming out this year, and recently we finally got a firm release date: August 21.

So we have some months to wait before we get to return to Westeros, but it’s finally in sight.

House of the Dragon will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on August 21

The choice to premiere in late August is interesting, since it means that House of the Dragon will overlap with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, another huge fantasy show coming out this year.

The Rings of Power premieres on Amazon Prime Video on September 2; very likely, Amazon will release the first three episodes of the show on the same day, as is their wont. House of the Dragon, on the other hand, will release episodes at a rate of one per week, so even though it’ll have a start, the shows will have the same number of episodes out in short order.

However, House of the Dragon has 10 episodes in its first season while The Rings of Power has eight, so HBO’s show will both start earlier than The Rings of Power and end later.

I don’t know if this means anything, I am looking forward to the back and forth online when these two shows are airing at the same time.

Next. Tommen was originally planned to die in a “big battle” on Game of Thrones. dark
