Jacaerys Velaryon

We’ve talked a lot about the characters supporting King Aegon. Let’s switch over to the other side and meet the folks on Team Rhaenyra, starting with her sons.

Known primarily as Jace, the eldest child of Princess Rhaenyra and her husband Laenor Velaryon (John Macmillan) is a noble and kind soul. Protective of his family, brave, and intelligent, Jace proves an excellent diplomat for his mother. At the start of the Dance, Jace is tasked with flying his dragon, Vermax, to every corner of the Seven Kingdoms in order to win support for Rhaenyra’s cause. It would be fun and interesting to see familiar areas like the Vale and Winterfell in a different time period through Jace’s experiences.

Also, just so you know, it’s very possible that Rhaenyra’s sons by Laenor aren’t actually Laenor’s but Ser Harwin Strong’s. Their’s is a complicated family.

Lucerys Velaryon

Affectionately known as Luce (Luke), Rhaenryra’s second child is a spirited but reckless dragon rider who is eager to fight for his Mother’s cause. He rides the dragon Arrax and is responsible for the loss of his cousin Aemond’s eye.

Luce’s death is the first major casualty of the civil war. It’s imperative that audiences fall in love with the actor who’s tasked with portraying him.

Joffrey Velaryon

The youngest of Rhaenyra’s children three children by *ahem* her husband Laenor, Joffrey is the baby of the family. He’s a lovable, brave child who wants to fight for his Mother but is kept away from the war in order to keep him safe.

Mushroom

Mushroom is a dwarf and a fool in service to Rhaenyra Targaryen. Although illiterate, he is smart after a fashion, although very silly, lascivious, and debauched.

We don’t know who is playing Mushroom, and it’s possible that the show might just omit him. I would hate to see all the good work with representation Game of Thrones did with Tyrion’s character undone with this depraved fool. The Mushroom of Fire & Blood is a volatile jokester who’s accounts of events can’t be trusted. I would be interested to see how the show, if they choose to include him, can update the character so he becomes an actual person with real motivations and problems.

Mushroom is near Rhaenyra for much of the Dance, although he’s not making the big decisions or fighting in the battles. It would be fascinating to position him as the representation of the audience, or of the common people who are suffering under despots battling it out for the throne.

Qarl Correy

We mentioned that Rhaenyra’s children by her husband Laenor are actually the result of her affair with Harwin Strong. While Rhaenyra and Laenor marry for political reasons, Laenor is about as openly gay as one can be in Westeros, and Qarl Correy is one of his famous lovers. A talented swordsman, Correy is thought to be jealous of Laenor’s other lovers. Eventually, Daemon Targaryen pays Correy to betray Laenor, and ends up becoming responsible for his lover’s untimely demise.

Joffrey Lonmouth

Laenor’s favorite lover and the namesake of his youngest child, Ser Joffrey is a tournament champion who resembles the famous Knight of Flowers from A Song of Ice and Fire. He openly bestows his favor on Laenor and is tragically killed in a tournament by Harwin Strong, Rhaenyra’s lover.
