The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt may just be one of the best video games of all time. Seven years after its release, it still often gets held up as a gem of an open world RPG. The Witcher 3 has won more than 260 Game of the Year awards, and it helped reintroduce The Witcher novels to many countries around the world, which in turn led to the Netflix television show starring Henry Cavill. When we talk about video games with a phenomenal cultural impact, The Witcher 3 unavoidably becomes part of that conversation.
It’s also a game notorious for its endlessly detailed world. The game came out almost a decade ago, and people are still finding hidden easter eggs despite the millions upon millions of hours that gamers everywhere have spent with the thing. But now, according to one of the game’s developers, one of The Witcher 3’s last secrets may have been found.
One of The Witcher 3’s final easter eggs has just been discovered
The scoop on this one comes courtesy of YouTuber xLetalis, who does all sorts of videos that plumb the depths of The Witcher 3 for hidden secrets. This particular easter egg revolves around the character Vivienne, who is the Duchess Anna Henrietta’s lady in waiting in Toussaint in the Blood and Wine expansion. One of the expansion’s numerous side quests revolves around Geralt discovering that Vivienne is cursed; whenever the moon is out, she transforms into a bird woman. Geralt is able to lift the curse, but unfortunately it means that Vivienne will only live a shortened lifespan of seven years. She’s happy with this as long as she’s rid of the transformations.
Vivienne makes her way to Skellige to live out her days. It’s here things get interesting. Using a special console command to speed up time, xLetalis waited seven years in-game to see what would happen to Vivienne. And right on cue, she collapses dead in her new Skellige home.
Philipp Weber, CD Projekt Red’s acting lead quest designer, has long teased that there was a secret related to Skellige that fans had not yet found in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. After xLetalis found this one, Weber confirmed that it was what he was referring to.
“I’m not sure if it’s the last secret, but it for sure is pretty close. Everyone hid so many details during the last months of development that people are probably still going to find something new one day,” Weber told IGN. “For sure this is the Easter egg I hid the most out of all the ones I did, so it’s quite impressive it was finally found.”
So seven years after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released, a hidden easter egg that requires a player to wait seven years in game was finally discovered. Weber is aware of the irony. It’s the kind of things that makes you believe the gods of gaming have a sense of humor, or maybe that Gaunter O’Dimm is watching from the shadows with a smirk.
Shohreh Aghdashloo is recording voiceovers for “a very popular game”
In other gaming news, The Expanse star Shohreh Aghdashloo posted a teaser to Twitter to let fans know she was in the studio lending her inimitable voice talents to a video game. “Our enemies are savage, cruel, and relentless, but knowing all this we must still fight on,” the actor says, shaking her fists at the microphone to get into character.
Aghdashloo is as renowned for her voice acting as for her live-action roles. She recently featured in the Netflix animated series Arcane and worked on the popular Mass Effect video games. Aghdashloo didn’t say what game this voice work was for, instead simply teasing that it is “a very popular game.” But she did confirm that it is not the next Mass Effect game, which is in development.
So for now, tis all fun and teasers. It’s funny to see Aghdashloo break down swearing partway through the video as she fumbles one of the lines; The Expanse may be over, but the spirit of Chrisjen Avasarala lives on!
CD Projekt Red is currently working on a fourth Witcher video game which will reportedly include an all new School of the Lynx branch of witchers. And the third season of The Witcher Netflix show has just begun filming. It’s a good time for a vacation to the Continent, just make sure to bring your silver blade for monsters.
