The Boys star worries he won’t work again after “weird” season 3

Between Homelander’s fixation on milk, Hughie’s fixation on Billy Joel, and the bit with the one superhero who strangles people with his very long…appendage, The Boys is a weird show. The Deep, an Aquaman-like superhero played by Chace Crawford, gets weirder material than most; whenever when he got high and had a conversation about body dysmorphia with his own gills, which were voiced by Patton Oswalt?

In the season 3 trailer, we see the Deep having sex with someone while fixated a little too much on a nearby octopus. He has a close relationship with sea life; don’t you judge him.

Apparently, things are going to get even stranger. “I can’t give too much away,” Crawford told Entertainment Weekly at the SXSW festival in Austin. “It’s weird.”

Jensen Ackles, who plays the new character Soldier Boy in season 3, provided some context. “I remember reading that stuff and you sent me a text message. And I have to go find it, but I think it was something like, ‘I don’t know how I’m gonna be able to work after this,'” he said.

Meanwhile, Ackles is excited to join the excellent established cast. “It was odd being the new kid on the block but pretending to be the old guy who’s been there the longest,” he said; his character is a World War II-era superhero clearly modeled off Captain America, complete with the fish-out-of-water-in-the-21st-century story. “That was cool and interesting and unique, but it also brought an interesting dynamic with the other supes having grandpa show up, so to speak. And it definitely lends itself to some odd scenes and dialogue.”

The Boys are faced with a moral dilemma in season 3

But enough about the vile supes. What about the Boys?

Well, the line between the two may be getting blurrier. As the trailer shows, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) gets superpowers this time around, something that happens near the start of The Boys comics. “That’s the dilemma: does Butcher become a superhero or a super villain?” Urban asked. “In order to defeat the monster, do you become the monster? And I think that’s one of the cool things about this season is every character is faced with that choice. How far are they willing to go? What line are they willing to cross in order to achieve what they want to achieve? For all the characters on the show, it creates a conflict and it’s fun to see who actually ends up on whose side.”

It sounds like Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso) will be wrestling with moral dilemma as well. He seems to be pretty settled at the end of season 2…but this is The Boys, so sooner or later you know things are going to collapse. “Why does he do this and can it be undone?” Alonso asked. “What I love about it, too, is it really challenges our relationships because Mother’s Milk, who is usually the voice of reason and tries to hold a mirror up to Butcher, in many ways, that mirror was held back this season.”

Finally, there’s Frenchie (Tomer Kapon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara), the latter of which already has powers. All we know about them is that they’re getting their own musical moment, as we see in the trailer. “Ladies and gentlemen, get ready,” Fukuhara said. “I never thought I would be able to do something like that, even in my acting career. I was so lucky to be able to do it on this show. And it’s so unexpected for especially my character. Yeah, I’m really excited for people to see it.”

The Boys season 3 will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on June 3.
