The Wheel of Time was Amazon Prime Video’s biggest show of 2021, and while it may have divided the fanbase, there’s no denying that it brought a lot of attention to the streaming service. Fans have been waiting a long time to see the adventures of Rand, Moiraine, Lan, Perrin, Egwene, Nynaeve, Mat and the rest on screen. For better or worse, we finally are able to see those adventures in an elaborately produced television series.

However, The Wheel of Time season 1 only covered the first novel of the 14-book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. Though it pulled in some elements from Book 2 and even Book 3, there’s still an awful lot of ground to cover if we’re ever going to see the Last Battle happen onscreen. Considering that season 1 ended with a few big cliffhangers, including Rand going off on his own and Moiraine seemingly being shielded from using the One Power, longtime fans and newcomers alike have plenty to be curious about for next season.

So when will we get to see The Wheel of Time season 2? Let’s discuss.

We don’t know The Wheel of Time season 2 release date

Season 2 of The Wheel of Time began filming way back in July of 2021, before the first season even aired on Prime Video. As of this writing, filming has not yet wrapped. The show has been in production for coming up on nine months now, which is a pretty long filming period. Things have been relatively quiet for a while now. We don’t know when it will wrap production, but given the long filming timeframe it feels like that announcement could get dropped on us at basically any moment.

Amazon has not announced a release date for season 2 yet…but we do have one big clue courtesy of The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins, who revealed that the show’s second season would air after Amazon’s next big fantasy show, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, debuts.

The Rings of Power premieres on September 2, 2022, and is comprised of eight episodes. While we don’t know for certain how many episodes of The Rings of Power will release at once, this still means that at the very latest, the show will wrap up its first season in mid-October. If The Wheel of Time season 2 is going to premiere after The Rings of Power, we’re likely looking at a November 2022 release at the earliest. Since the show hasn’t even finished filming yet and has lots of special effects, it’s possible we won’t see season 2 until sometime in 2023.

For now, The Wheel of Time season 1 is still available on Prime Video, should you pine for a re-watch.
